Shopping in Athens is an experience that perfectly reflects the city’s lively and diverse vibes.
Big commercial stores, boutique shops, local designers, and flea markets all come together to offer a diverse range of tastes. Either you’re into proper shopping, a small souvenir, or a thoughtful gift for someone back home, here’s where to go and what to expect.
Ermou Street
for visiting the commercial center of Athens

If Athens had a shopping artery, it would be Ermou street.
Starting from Syntagma Square and stretching all the way down to Monastiraki, this pedestrian street has international brands, Greek labels, and plenty of Athenian life in between like musicians playing live, people selling koulouri (the round sesame bread, a true Greek classic) and the sound of the laterna, the hand-cranked music box that still plays old melodies on the sidewalks.
As you walk, you’ll pass historic buildings, small squares, and side streets filled with independent boutiques that give Athens its charm. Just off Ermou, you’ll find Mitropoleos and Aiolou Streets, with jewelry designers, small concept stores, and Greek-made fashion brands which is perfect if you’re looking for something a little more personal.
Kolonaki
for sophisticated shopping
Kolonaki, right next to Syntagma, is the elegant side of Athens and a must for anyone who loves design and fashion. Around Voukourestiou, Skoufa, and Tsakalof Streets, you’ll find handmade leather goods, fine jewelry, and a mix of Greek and international designers. Here, art galleries and concept stores create a balance between modern minimalism and timeless style.
Kolonaki is also perfect for a short break from shopping. You can sit at a stylish café for an espresso or a glass of wine and indulge in the neighborhood’s chic atmosphere.
Monastiraki, Plaka, Thiseio & Psirri
for markets with memories
If you want to experience the most vibrant part of Athens, head to Monastiraki.
Its flea market has sports shoes, leather-made goods, handcrafted objects, jewelry, vinyls, clothes, souvenirs, antiques, and much more. On weekends, the energy is even stronger, with vendors setting up stalls and live music echoing through the narrow streets.
Next, it’s Plaka, where everything slows down. You stop for a photo and you end up staying longer because it feels so warm and authentic. In Its cobblestone streets you will see small family shops selling leather sandals, linen clothing, pottery, and natural products made in Greece. It’s also one of the best areas to buy souvenirs.
Walk a little further and you’ll reach Thiseio, where the pedestrian street fills with vendors selling handmade jewelry and art pieces, all under the view of the Acropolis.
If you continue towards Psirri, you’ll find a mix of creativity and tradition with workshops turned into concept spaces, small design studios, and local spots where you can stop for a meze.
This entire route passing through Monastiraki, Plaka, Thiseio, and Psirri reveals a human, open, and spontaneous side of Athens, full of genuine people, bars, restaurant and nice spots.
Koukaki
for local & handmade artworks and boutique stores
Beyond the main shopping streets, in neighborhoods like Koukaki, you’ll find workshops creating ceramics, handmade accessories, and Greek natural products.
Many of these spaces are small, boutique, and full of inspiration. You might meet the maker, hear the story behind an object, and feel the love that went into it.
While in Athens, remember to take your time.
Athens is a city where you can walk around and explore with no plans.
All these areas are full of options for coffee, snacks, and restaurants, perfect for taking small breaks as you go shopping.
These main shopping spots are within walking distance from Arcade Hotel, giving you the flexibility and convenience to plan your day as you go.
